Musical Mentors and 2013!

In November 2012 I had the opportunity to attend the Ontario Music Educators Conference! I had the good fortune to run into my old junior high school band teacher Brian Appleby who was attending the conference from Edmonton. I was able to grab Brian and newly appointed Professor Gordon Foote of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto (photo below).  Both Brian and Gordon have remained great friends over the years.  They both gave me an incredible musical education and have inspired a great passion for music in hundreds (perhaps thousands) of students over the years including myself.

The JAZZFM91 Youth Big Band got off to a great start this year with a concert featuring Shirantha Beddage and an appearance at The Rex Hotel.  The band is getting ready for a busy stretch performing with saxophonist Tom Scott on Monday February 25th, 2013 as part of the Sound of Jazz Concert Series at The Old Mill and a concert at York University on March 7th, 2013.

I am pleased to have booked my first appearance at The Homesmith Bar on Saturday March 9th, 2013.  Since I live within a short drive and frequently attend this venue it’s nice to have the opportunity to perform there!

Plans for the Kincardine Summer Jazz Camp 2013 are underway!  I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take over the program last summer and book some exciting acts as well as a world class music faculty.  I am looking at continuing to recruit students from London, Owen Sound and Toronto to attend the camp and we’ll have information out shortly.  It’s a great program and a highlight of my summer.

An exciting spring 2012!

What an exciting month!

Last week the JAZZFM91 Youth BIg Band performed at JAZZLIVES 2912 with among other guests John Scofield, Tom Scott, Heavy Weights Brass Band and Ramsey Lewis! The students performed Paul Ashwell’s Penultimate Mode and Libertango by Astor Piazzolla.

One of the highlights of the year was presenting a student concert at Malvern Collegiate Institute on Friday April 20th, 2012.  Mike Falla does a great job there and we enjoyed sharing the stage with the Malvern students.

On Saturday April 14th, 2012 we shared a concert with Mike Cado and the York University Jazz Ensemble in their wonderful concert hall! Trombonist Ron Westray and Sundar Viswanathan joined us for a couple of numbers.

I am happy to be performing at the Cherry Street Resturant on Thursday June 21st, 2012 with special guest Kelsley Grant. Joel Haynes and Duncan Hopkins will be joining us for a trip down J&K memory lane! More details to follow!

I have been working dilegently on the Kincardine Summer Jazz Camp running from August 5th-10th!  I am speciflcally working on filling the camp with new students.  JAZZFM91 and Long and McQuade have come through with some scholarship money which will find it’s way to worthy students of jazz!

The Lew Tabacking concert will be broadcast on JAZZFM91 on Sunday May 27th, 2012 at 11:00am.
