It has been a really exciting week having saxophonist Tom Scott up from Los Angeles, California to work with the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band! Tom was fantastic and the kids put on a great show at The Old Mill last Monday night. One of the best all round performances in four years!
I am looking forward to taking the JAZZ.FM91 Youth BIg Band up to York University to perform in their wonderful Tribute Communities Recital Hall. The kids will have the opportunity to play with Ron Westray (trombone) and Sundar Viswanathan (saxophone) as special guests with the group. This concert was certainly one of the highlights of our year last season. Thanks to Mike Cado for making all the arrangements and making this happen!
Excited to play at the Home Smith Bar at The Old Mill with Brian Dickinson and Duncan Hopkins on Saturday night! Thanks Robyn for a great poster!
In November 2012 I had the opportunity to attend the Ontario Music Educators Conference! I had the good fortune to run into my old junior high school band teacher Brian Appleby who was attending the conference from Edmonton. I was able to grab Brian and newly appointed Professor Gordon Foote of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto (photo below). Both Brian and Gordon have remained great friends over the years. They both gave me an incredible musical education and have inspired a great passion for music in hundreds (perhaps thousands) of students over the years including myself.
The JAZZFM91 Youth Big Band got off to a great start this year with a concert featuring Shirantha Beddage and an appearance at The Rex Hotel. The band is getting ready for a busy stretch performing with saxophonist Tom Scott on Monday February 25th, 2013 as part of the Sound of Jazz Concert Series at The Old Mill and a concert at York University on March 7th, 2013.
I am pleased to have booked my first appearance at The Homesmith Bar on Saturday March 9th, 2013. Since I live within a short drive and frequently attend this venue it’s nice to have the opportunity to perform there!
Plans for the Kincardine Summer Jazz Camp 2013 are underway! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take over the program last summer and book some exciting acts as well as a world class music faculty. I am looking at continuing to recruit students from London, Owen Sound and Toronto to attend the camp and we’ll have information out shortly. It’s a great program and a highlight of my summer.
